Vision Zero

Our Vision Zero mission is to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries within the city by 2040. Vision Zero is a systemic approach to increase safety and mobility for all roadway users by:

  • Building and maintaining smarter streets for improved driver behavior

  • Engaging communities to expand awareness through education and encouragement

  • Prioritizing areas with high numbers of pedestrians, cyclists and transit riders

First implemented in Sweden in the 1990s, Vision Zero consists of a growing network of cities which share a commitment to increase transportation safety, prioritizing equity and community engagement. Nationwide, the collaborative campaign addresses the crisis of 40,000 traffic deaths and millions of injuries a year.

In 2017, Mayor Buddy Dyer signed a resolution to adopt a Vision Zero Action Plan. We engaged community members and experts to understand the factors contributing to traffic violence in our city. The Vision Zero Orlando Action Plan outlines strategies to reduce crashes. It also describes ways to share the progress of the program’s goals with the community.

Our goals are:

  1. Adopt a safe systems approach in roadway design, operations, and maintenance;
  2. Increase everyone's understanding of the leading causes of crashes resulting in fatalities or serious injuries;
  3. Support law enforcement efforts to eliminate behaviors leading to serious injury and fatal crashes;
  4. Demonstrate continuous progress toward Vision Zero;
  5. Improve access and travel time to Level 1 Trauma Center and other hospitals; and
  6. Prioritize investments and programs in communities including underserved populations and higher numbers of vulnerable road users.

We’re not stopping there. Here are some upcoming Vision Zero projects the city is looking forward to bringing to life.

  • Expanding Leading Pedestrian Intervals (LPI) strategically throughout our Main Street corridors to give people crossing the street a head start.
    • LPI’s can reduce crashes by 13%
  • City of Orlando was awarded the only USDOT RAISE Planning Grant to develop a Vision Zero Implementation Plan. The project will focus on six corridors and identify context specific countermeasures and capital improvements dubbed Orlando CROSS: Connecting Residents on Safe Streets.
